Frequently Asked Questions

A.

A chevron road sign (W1-8) marks a sharp curve so drivers can judge the turn before they reach it. Posted in a row on the outside of the bend, the chevrons act as a continuous guide — each one you pass points to the next, tracing the road's path through the whole curve.

A.

Yes. The FHWA lists chevron signs as a Proven Safety Countermeasure for horizontal curves. On their own, they cut non-intersection curve crashes by about 16%; combined with curve warning signs and flashing beacons as a full curve treatment, the reduction reaches roughly 38–48% for fatal and injury crashes. A curve you can see the shape of at night is a curve drivers slow down for; see our reviews for customer testimonials.

Chevrons sit about 40 ft apart on a tight, low-speed curve and stretch to roughly 200 ft on a wide, high-speed one. This keeps the guidance continuous so a driver can always see the next chevron lit up while passing the last, so there is never a gap through the turn.

The right size scales with road speed. For a neighborhood street or private drive, we recommend 12" x 18"; standard highways use 18" x 24" or 24" x 30"; freeways and severe curves call for 30" x 36" or 36" x 48". A bigger sign allows for easier recognition on the road, leading to faster driver reaction time, which is why higher-speed routes step up in size.

Yellow with a black symbol is the MUTCD warning color, reserved for advance notice of a condition that calls for slowing down. And yes, chevrons are retroreflective — the whole point is guiding drivers through curves after dark. For highway and night use, we recommend High Intensity Prismatic (ASTM D4956 Type IV) or Diamond Grade (Type XI) sheeting, which bounce headlight beams straight back so the arrows light up well ahead of the turn.

Install chevron signs on the outside of the curve, facing approaching traffic at a right angle, with the bottom of the sign at least 4 feet above the edge of the pavement. Space them so a driver always has at least two chevrons in view through the turn. For placement that reads cleanly, we recommend setting the run before the curve starts and carrying it past the sharpest point.

A.

A chevron (W1-8) is posted in a series and paints a dotted line through a long curve, one arrow at a time. A One Direction Large Arrow (W1-6) is a single big arrow that mounts on the far side of a sharp curve or T-intersection as one clear cue. For a long, sweeping bend, we recommend chevrons; for a sudden turn where one sign faces the driver head-on, the W1-6 does the job — and many roads run both.

A.

Chevrons give long-range guidance from before the curve, guardrail delineators add short-range visibility right at the barrier edge, and retroreflective pavement markers trace the lane line at ground level. The three cover far, near, and underfoot, so the driver gets the same read of the curve at every distance.

About our Chevron Road Signs

We make chevron road signs (MUTCD W1-8): black-on-yellow horizontal-alignment signs that mark the outside of a sharp curve so drivers can read the bend before they feel it. A chevron alignment sign works in a series. Posted in a row, the run of arrows draws a dotted line through the turn, giving continuous guidance where a single curve-ahead sign warns only once. This keeps a driver tracking the road edge through the entire change in direction, day or night.

Chevron signs are not decoration. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) lists them among its Proven Safety Countermeasures for horizontal curves, where many run-off-road crashes happen. On their own, chevron alignment signs reduce non-intersection crashes on a curve by about 16%. Paired with curve warning signs and sequential flashing beacons as a full curve-treatment package, crash reduction climbs to roughly 38–48% for fatal and injury crashes. The reason is simple: a driver who can see the shape of the curve at night, one lit chevron at a time, slows down and steers in time instead of guessing.

For chevron signs, we recommend matching the size to the road's speed. Faster traffic needs a bigger sign for enough reaction time.

Chevron signs handle long-range guidance. A driver reads the run of arrows from well before the curve. Up close, they work alongside two other devices. Guardrail delineators (small retroreflective markers mounted on the barrier) give short-range, at-the-edge visibility where a vehicle would leave the road. Retroreflective pavement markers (raised or in-line road studs) trace the lane line through the curve at ground level. Used together, chevrons, delineators, and pavement markers give a driver the same message at three distances. This is why DOT curve-treatment plans specify them as a set rather than one at a time.

  • • For a sharp curve, we recommend a run of W1-8 chevrons on the outside of the bend. The repeating arrows show the turn's direction and how tight it is, so a driver reads the curve early.
  • • For the single-arrow version, we offer the One Direction Large Arrow (W1-6), which mounts on the far side of a curve as a one-sign backstop; many roads use W1-6 and W1-8 together.
  • • For striped delineator designs, point the stripes down toward the side traffic should pass — the slant tells drivers which way to steer around the obstruction.
  • • Every chevron is printed on rust-proof aluminum with premium 3M retroreflective films and inks, built to stay bright outdoors for 10+ years.
  • • Left and right graphics come in sizes from 12" x 18" to 30" x 36", in stock and ready to ship. They also work off-road in parking lots, warehouses, and forklift lanes.
